I absolutely loved this series of comics. Not only my favorite story arc out of those I know, but the introduction of my favorite character Kitty Pryde. I'm a fairly new comic book reader but I know all of the tv shows arcs are usually loosely based off the comics. And the movies... Meh that's another story with some of them. But this is beautifully drawn and beautifully told. I'm only 22, wasn't even thought of when this was created, yet I appreciate the depth and beauty that was put into this. If you're even mildly interested in the Dark Phoenix Saga based on the 90s tv show, or just even mildly interested in starting X-Men comics, this is one you should pick up. You won't be disappointed in this read.

Xmen fan so I had to get these.
Great story, art and excellent pricing!
Very good book that I enjoyed greatly.
Great read. Included a lot of extra comics to round out the Dark Phoenix Saga, which added to the immense entertainment. Also, there is an added conclusion to the Wendigo storyline (which began in hulk 181 where we first meet Wolverine). Could have done without the annual issue with Dr. Strange and Nightcrawler, however, all in all it was a great read. I highly recommend getting this book as opposed to getting each individual comic separately.
very enjoyable, i am a huge fan of everything x-man
This collection of past issues of the Uncanny X-Men is wonderful for variety of reasons. First, the introduction of Sebastion Shaw and Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club. Second, you get the entire Dark Phoenix saga wich includes argueably the best comic book cover ever, issue #135! Third, Kitty Pryde (Shadow Cat) is recruited and eventually joins the X-Men. And if you have ever played the X-Men Legends II Rise of Apocalypse video game, you must kow that there is a unique Green Item Wendigo's Fist. Well, these Uncanny X-Men battle said Wendigo in issue #140! Great, great collection of comics because you certainly can't beat the price.
Mild spoilers ... though nothing you can't see from the cover ... and if you've seen anything X-Men (the 90's cartoons, the movies, etc.), you've probably seen SOME version of this classic comic story ... but this is how it originally happened, and why that story has been so beloved ever since.

I collected X-Men comics back in the 80's. When I could, I even looked for good prices on back issues. The death of Phoenix affected the story arcs I started reading and lasted for hundreds of issues ... even after Jean Grey was reborn (maybe a few times ... ). The action with Wolverine at the Hellfire Club was also something often referred to in later comics (I won't say how) ... the iconic end shot of issue 132 and then issue 133 is somewhat the birth of the brutal but effective style Wolverine became famous for, whereas before this he was more of just a cocky jerk who not even the writers or artists seemed to like very much.

I read this edition with my kids, who had NEVER heard this story before. They loved the action with the Hellfire Club leading up to the final conflict. They were somewhat impressed with the ultimate reveal of the villain behind the mysterious dreams Jean has (we've also read some VERY early/classic X-men with that particular character in it). We all were drawn in by the darkness that overtakes Jean Grey and moved by the moral weight of what the X-Men had to deal with, standing by a friend who had been corrupted by great power. One strength of this story and that particular double issue in general is you get to see the ethics from each of the x-men's viewpoint as they decide wither to stand by their friend who has been put on trial by combat for the slaughter of ... well, maybe I'm saying too much ...

I also LOVED reading the bonus material detailing the background behind the change of the original ending, and also checking out the full original comic art in the back. Hard to image how different the X-Men story would have been if Jean Grey hadn't been killed. This has been published other places, but it was new to this fan.

The extra Jean Grey story included didn't stand out to me as much. Not bad, but not as special as the rest of the issue, in my view.

A powerful story arc with innovative writing and great art ... I recommend buying all the Masterwork X-Men ... or at least the John Byrne ones ... and reading to this point. The story may not compare to some well written comics that have come since, but this was a groundbreaker for it's day that affected comics for years to come, and you can see why reading it.
